About Us

Quincy Fire Protection District

Serving Our Community Since 1878

The Quincy Fire Protection District (QFPD) provides fire protection and emergency services to the residents of Quincy and surrounding rural areas in Plumas County, California. We are a volunteer-based fire department dedicated to protecting life, property, and the environment through:

  • Emergency response
  • Fire prevention
  • Public safety education

Our History

The fire service in Quincy began in 1878 with the creation of the Quincy Volunteer Fire Department (QVFD). Originally named Quincy Hose Company No. 1, the department was formed by local residents to protect the growing community from frequent fires.

In its early years, QVFD operated with horse-drawn equipment and relied entirely on community donations and volunteer service. Over time, the department grew to meet the needs of a changing town.

On June 1, 1917, more than 50 residents petitioned to establish formal fire protection. As a result, the Quincy Fire Protection District was created under California law. This allowed the community to access public funding and implement structured governance.

Our Services

Today, QFPD continues to operate as a special district with support from dedicated volunteers and community partnerships. We respond to a wide range of emergencies, including:

  • Structure fires
  • Wildland fires
  • Medical emergencies
  • Vehicle accidents
  • Rescue operations
  • Public service calls

Our department uses modern fire apparatus and equipment while maintaining a deep connection to our historic roots.

Supporting Our Volunteers

The Quincy Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that raises funds to support volunteer firefighters. These funds help provide:

  • Personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Communication tools
  • Hydration supplies
  • Safety gear and training support

Our Commitment

For more than 145 years, Quincy Fire has served the community with the guiding principle:
Neighbors helping neighbors.

We remain committed to service, safety, and preparedness—today and into the future.

Our Vision For Our Future

What We Aspire to Become

"To be a safe, well-staffed, well-trained, and well-equipped all-volunteer  fire department that is a model for other rural communities."

Our Values, What We Believe In, and How We Behave

Financially Frugal and Accountable

We pride ourselves on running a great fire department at a very low cost. We are accountable for all our spending, and often volunteer our labor for construction or maintenance projects.

Dedication

We are dedicated and prepared to respond day and night. Volunteer Fire Departments require many hours of service. We spend much additional time training, maintaining equipment and facilities, and participating in meetings, fundraising events, and community events.
